artists statement
I have always had this compulsion to make things. I see textures , shapes and colors all around me and I want to put them together. As an "undecided" freshman in college I happened to walk past a potter at work and knew THAT'S IT that's what I want to do. I got my degree in fine arts form the U of Puget Sound. I set up shop as a production potter, built a wood burning kiln and lived my dream. I started teaching pottery classes to all the neighborhood kids and LOVED it. I have been teaching for the past 8 years at the White Bear Center for the Arts. Where i took a class in silver clay and again I knew THIS IS IT. I took certification training in silver clay jewelry and now combine the two mixing textures, shapes and colors into clay and silver vessels, tiles, jewelry and who knows what will be next.
The majority of my jewelry is created using PMC (silver clay). Silver particles are recycled from film and other industrial uses and mixed with an organic binder. The silver is then manipulated like clay, dried, sanded and fired in a kiln to sinter away the organic binder. Then its polished and patined. What's left is 99% pure silver. I also use rocks, clay, vintage jewelry pieces taken apart, pewter, beads and whatever looks interesting.

My pottery is wheel thrown, hand-built and altered or added to. It is mostly stoneware fired to cone 6 oxidation. Some of the pieces have silver added and are fired again at cone 018. I also apply silver to Raku pieces when glazing and fire them together.
